Three Foot Care Tips for The Beach

Have you made plans yet this summer to get to the beach?

Plan it out now! Having a special weekend getaway to look forward to will only help your workweek go by that much more quickly. For those of us with foot and ankle issues, it’s always good to keep our feet on our mind when traveling.

This is still true even for a trip to the beach! Beach bum life usually calls for enjoying your day barefoot in the sand, but it’s easier said than done for those of us with foot or ankle conditions. Many aspects of beach going can be beneficial for our feet, such as getting an added strengthening exercise or a free exfoliation and circulation boost due to the sandy terrain. There are, however, a few things we need to look out for and keep in mind when enjoying beach time!

1) WEAR SUNSCREEN ON YOUR FEET

  • You read that right! Your feet need protection from the sun, too. While many people won’t ever experience sunburn on the skin of their feet, this doesn’t mean they aren’t silently damaging their skin from harsh UV rays that can lead to skin cancer developing.

2 ) WARM UP BEFORE GOING ON THE SAND

  • Especially if you took a long drive to get to your beach destination, be sure to stretch it out and warm up before going on the beach. This can help you avoid muscle fatigue and keep you limber while setting up your beach bum territory for the day!

3) BRING WALKING SHOES OR SANDALS FOR LONG WALKS

  • Don’t just bring the shoes already on your feet! Bring an extra pair of shoes, like a pair of supportive sandals or walking shoes. These are important to use if you have to walk through sand that is particularly rocky or if you decide to take a longer walk on the beach. Go the extra mile with a pair of water shoes, too!
