Metatarsal Fractures Can Be Challenging
A Metatarsal Fracture occurs when one of the midfoot bones becomes injured by a sudden fracture or a recurrent stress fracture. The metatarsal bones are unfortunately some of the most frequently fractured foot bones. Sudden (or acute) metatarsal fractures are the result of sudden forces such as dropping dense objects onto the foot and are basically direct hits to the foot. Twisting the foot is also an unexpected move and can cause this type of fracture as the ligament that connects to the fifth metatarsal bone pulls off a piece of the bone.
This, as you can imagine, is a common occurrence for those who are active with their feet for a living, such as ballet dancers or runners.
Symptoms of this condition include instant pain and sensitivity in the foot at the location of the metatarsal bones. Moreover, the inflammation that can result from this condition will make it difficult to place weight on the injured foot or to perform routine movements of the foot.
Treatment for this condition involves:
The use of anti-inflammatories to reduce pain and swelling
Ice therapy to ease pain and reduce inflammation
Getting plenty of rest to facilitate healing
Elevation of the foot
Avoiding any activities that increase the chances of this condition reoccurring
Using of support devices such as crutches
Surgery to potentially re-align the bone
Physical therapy to strengthen any injured ligaments
As it can be seen, this condition can turn into a significant problem if not treated properly.
